Peter, a grade 11 student, is an enthusiastic and talented violinist who participates in both the Junior and Senior String Orchestras at his school while also maintaining an average over 90% and participating in a number of other school activities. He has also reached out to his community using his musical talents through his STRUM initiative (Students Teaching Refugees Universal Music) which is his charity of choice. Peter and some of his colleagues taught refugees from the region to play musical instruments and the teaching school will be expanding for the summer of 2012. Peter feels that STRUM is distinct from other charities because it is helping refugee children integrate into life in Canada by sharing musical knowledge in a method otherwise unavailable to them. They can learn to play violin, cello, guitar or piano in a six week program which also helps them to discover courage, friendship and entertainment. It offers a place where students can relax, surrounded by friends and music. As Peter explains, STRUM lets each student and staff member broaden their view of the world and dissolve the barriers of language, culture and religion with music.
