Melissa Malcolm

Melissa’s commitment to service and her compassion for helping those in need make her an ideal choice for the France Anne Sweeny Making a Difference Award. She has demonstrated a commitment to learning as a strong student and has a positive attitude in all that she does. Melissa is very involved in various activities and clubs in her school including the Me to We program. She is also part of the Athletic Club and the Link Crew. Her commitment to service extends to her community as well as she volunteers in her church and through the City of Waterloo’s Youth Council. Like so many others, Melissa has been affected by Cancer as she watched a friend fight Leukemia. For this reason, the Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay for Life is her charity of choice. The 12 hour event is a fundraiser for cancer research but also a night to remember those we have lost to cancer and a chance to bring together cancer survivors and those who are currently fighting the disease. Melissa especially appreciates the feeling of hope that is such a strong part of the event. She plans to continue her work with the Relay for Life but has also decided to start volunteering at the Grand River Hospital’s Cancer Centre to help cancer patients on a personal level and help to make a difference in their lives.
