Karley exhibits positive qualities while balancing academic demands and extra-curricular activities. She is committed to service and she is committed to making a difference. She does this through her work running her school’s “Be a Buddy Club”. The club is the first of its kind to integrate students with special needs and their peers. Through their participation in lunchtime activities such as sports, crafts and games, the students with special needs experience acceptance and the volunteers gain an awareness of differences and an understanding of an inclusive community. Her passion to recognize the “Ability” rather than the Disability is the goal of her charity of choice, Sports for Special Athletes. For over 10 years, they have provided special citizens of Waterloo region with the opportunity to participate in a number of sports activities. This charity’s ability to provide hope and inclusion in our community has inspired Karley to continue her work with her “Be a Buddy Club”. She is truly making a difference in the lives of these students and their families.
